My friends who I've hooked on Firefly - including Meg come to think of it - I've had to tell them to give the pilot at least half an hour. I know I turned it off after ten minutes the first time I watched it. "You'll be like, 'eh,'" I say, "and then this thing happens and you'll be like 'I love this show forever! LOVE FOREVER!'"

It's the thing where

Mal tells Simon that Kaylee's died

, of course.

This makes MVG go "Bad pilot? Wha?"
Firefly's got maybe the best pilot of a sci-fi show ever; and sci-fi show pilots nearly always stink (FarScape's is pretty good too). I dug it all the way through.

This makes MDS go "I agree Vinny"
Warning Firefly Spoiler: I've had many friends come up and go on about how awesome the pilot is, that you don't know who the heroes are because it just starts with throwing you into this battle and... All I can think of while they go on about how much they enjoyed it is "They weren't wearing HELMETS! You couldn't tell who the main characters were!? They were the only idiots who came to a battle without helmets! Did we watch the same show?" Reminds me of WWII movies where main character runs over to wounded character who is clearly out in the open enough to be shot and the first thing big name actor does is rip his own helmet off as he asks the wounded soldier if he's okay. I thought it was a really good show with one unwatchable and three other weak episodes. Unfortunately when it was first airing on Fox the I saw one weak episode and the unwatchable episode and so I didn't care that it got cancelled.
