I've never designed a game, but I can tell you that my religious upbringing has affected how I approach play in games about religion, especially DitV. I was raised Roman Catholic (very much no longer RC), and there, if you're a real RC and not an Easter/Xmas RC, the rules are the rules and you don't break, or bend, or try to reinterpret them. Whatever the Pope says goes, even if he summons the queen spider for consultation. Playing DitV, I and my friends have noticed my tendency to play very straight and narrow characters. Whatever I, as the player, decide is doctrine as decided by the Temple Elders, well my character tries their darnedest to never stray even an inch from that line. Anyway, I attribute this completely to by background in RC. |
