It seems to me that religion has to make sense even when belief doesn't. Like, Mormonism doesn't disappear even though some of the beliefs Mormons hold are plain nonsense, and it doesn't disappear even though Mormons don't usually act on the nonsensical beliefs that they hold, and it doesn't even disappear when Mormons hold diverse and contradictory beliefs (which of course they do). It seems to me that under scrutiny, belief evaporates anyway. We tell ourselves stories in our heads about why we've done what we've done, and how we think the world works, but they're just stories.
