The one downside of "informal" is that it looks at this like it's a dichotomy, which it isn't.

P.S. Oh, hey, in the text of Polaris I called this sort of play "free play." Maybe that helps. "Free play" vs. "Formal play" vs. "Ad-hoc play" etc.
