The thing is, though, that you want to present your players, as Simon says, with an apparently unified and single, thus easily grasped, game. So you integrate its subsystems and do everything you can to focus your audience's attention on their flow and unity.

Looking at a game's structure, to understand its design, means looking past what it presents to its players. Alas, you'll never play a game for plain honest fun again.
