There's a learning curve issue, but it cuts both ways: similarity makes it easier to learn, but also easier to get the system confused. If you can imagine a game where the talking system uses dice and the fighting system uses cards, people are less likely to (out of confusion or ignorance) try to use their fighting abilities while talking.
