It's possible that you could buy the player in on the preconscious driver's side, against the character's conscious self, so it's not like feeling screwed by a bad save, but I haven't thought very hard about that.

Is there are metaphor for our consciousness vs preconsciousness that's compelling enough to you, or do you have to play it straight? (Now we're in "insight into your subject matter" territory.) What about robots?
