I meant to just quickly link to his series on Archer, here, where he says that a key quality of farce is a mismatch between conflicts and the arenas they play out in: "the higher the stakes are, the more serious the 'mission,' the more base the cast's motivations should be." But lower down the search page are links to his posts on The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Hudsucker Proxy and it is only with supreme discipline that I can tear myself away.
