We're pretty much saying the same thing from a different perspective.

You: "What do you want the game to be about?"
Me: What kind of emergence do you want?

You: "Make the player do that thing."
Me: What kind of components shall we include to play with to create that emergence?

That's, in fact, the one legit use I see for creating a scheme of named categories: to illustrate that there's a whole range of possibilities, when someone's used to thinking of only one.
