I expect there'll always be an object! If you don't design one, it'll be there, of course, subconscious and emergent.

... but I wonder if I get a better game if I decide it up front, or if I can reliably make a good game without realising the object till later.

This makes AD go "Well, I think you *can* reliably make a good game..."
but I think the whole drive of intelligently designing things says that it's of course helpful to know your object. Like, I can come up with something tasty just by experimenting and trying what comes up. But once I have that cool idea for a dish (goal), I can then perfect it.
