I taught ESL in Japan for a year. Many of my students were Korean Japanese, and yes, they really are second-class citizens. One of my students was taking a trip to the US, but it was difficult because he didn't have a Japanese passport--because he wasn't a full citizen, being of Korean descent.

that, as I recall, the archaeological evidence suggests the Japanese Imperial family (and ironworking, and key institutions) came from Korea in the 5th century AD or so, which is why the digs were shut down.
