Pfeh. I don't think anything in roleplaying is worth protecting. If it can't stand up on its own without my protection, it deserves to fall.
Instead, I'd say that a player's identification with a particular protagonist will serve certain design goals well and serve other design goals poorly.
This makes RIF go "Everyone's doing Identification!"
I've been seeing a lot of this Identification biz lately; it seems the next step on from the Immersion discussions late last year. I'll have to get my own article/rant finished...
