I think the pregen character example is a little misleading, or at least not totally relevent. I think it's important to note that the player who's handed a pregen at a Con or whatever, from the moment they take the character sheet, has total control over the character. The influence of the GM or who wrote the character stops.

In contrast, with the type of thing Vincent is suggesting, the influence of the other players continue throughout the game. I'm not trying to say this is good or bad, just that it's different from the pregen example.

This makes BR go "In addition"
In a pregen you don't start the character, the GM does. In Vincents example you start (and end?) the character, but others have a say in what goes on in the middle.

This makes dhs_rr go "I agree the pre gen example is different, however..."
The pre gen example was supposed to be an example of others controlling character _creation_. the next examples regarding the background changes were more geared to the ongoing changes idea: by rewriting the background in play, the GM changed my character a number of times. I was trying to explore what each felt like by thinking of examples when each had happened. The point at which I feel like I've "lost ownership" is not when someone else creates the character, nor is it when they change it. It is the point at which I don't get to always choose actions. However this is a "first thoughts" kind of thing, and only my experience, so who knows what it really means.
