Because I hate to see my lone awesome unit bull-rushed and swamped by a dozen mooks. It's not very heroic.
There are several ways out of that though, like a single use "back off!" gun, or even an "honor duel" that forces players to pair off mechs for the heroic face-off if they want all the victory points.
