The words and the singer are all-in-all to me, and I don't like extended instrumental bits in my song-listening. And if the song tells a story, as most (all?) ballads do, then I am in heaven. I've softened on gospel songs, a bit, in my old age, but I am definitely a British Isles rather than American kind of folkie.
