What I meant by dictionary definitions not being what we're after wasn't a knock against that. It was a way of saying that the simple definition isn't nearly so interesting as the history of the word, the way the usage has changed, the way it gets used in specific terms (see Sydney's theological definition of create), and the ways in which we all use it differently anyway.
If language is a game, etymology is the history of actual play.
