The fact that the "even now? even now?" creates a dialouge between the GM and players about Sin is purely incidental? I don't entirely buy that.

No, of course it's part of the point of the game. But it's not intended to drive the situation between the PCs in any particular direction. It is, wrt that situation, unfocused grief.
